August Underground's Penance (2007)

The first thing you'll notice about this final part of the August Underground Trilogy is the picture and sound quality are a vast imnprovement. They went for a different approach in the making of this one, and although it's still the same nastiness as the others it feels more movie like. We also get a little more story in this one as the killer couple's relationship starts to break down.

Still not as good as the first this is definitely a big step up from Mordum, at least for me it was. The brutality and nastiness is still there in abundance, in fact there are a couple of scenes in this that may rank as the most genuinely unpleasant in the entire trilogy. There's some gurgling entrails which is honestly gag inducing, and the sight of an unborn baby lying on the gutted stomach of it's dead mother made me feel genuinely upset so fair play to them for that!.

The gore effects are of course excellent with some of it looking very realistic. There's actually a little acting in this one to go with more mostly improvised dialogue. It may not be as realistic as the first, or as out and out nasty as Mordum, but I'd say it's the best made of the three and you can really see Fred Vogel improving as a film maker.

I still think that the first August Underground movie should have been left as a one off, but, as a trilogy I'd say this final entry is my second favourite and I'd recommend it!. As with the other two though, make sure you know what you're getting into before you watch something like this!.
