A young bullied and lonely boy strikes up a friendship with a young girl who moves into the apratment block he lives at. He soon realises she's not all she seems.

First time I saw this movie I loved it and it became one of my all time favourites!. Everything from the acting by the two young leads, the stunning cinematography, the restrained gore are all so good!. The book is also excellent but is far more explicit and disturbing. Thankfully most of that is left out of the film version and is only implied, especially when it comes to the relationship between Eli and her gaurdian.

The movie manages a great balance of being creepy, atmospheric, brutal and sad. The score is stunning, especially Eli's theme. Some of the set pieces are also amazing, the swimming pool scene being a standout. Okay, so the CGI cat attack isn't exactly great, but for me it's doesn't spoil the movie in any way.

There is an American remake which is one of those pointless remakes as it's almost identical to this, just not as good. The script is littered with profanity which wasn't needed and makes you wonder why they even bothered. Not a bad film by any means, just a pointless remake that doesn't need to exist. If you haven't seen the original Swedish version then do so first. Definitely recommended to any horror fan!.
