Nightmares In A Damaged Brain (1981)

(AKA: Nightmare)

A mental patient who suffers from horrific nightmares escapes from an asylum and embarks on a killing spree as he searches for a young family.

Heavily cut in the UK back in the 80s but it still managed to get itself banned as one of the video nasties. It remained on the list to become one of the infamous final 39. It's a rare case where you can see why it caused problems back then. It's very mean spirited, very gory and add to that a healthy does of sex and sleaze and there was no way this was ever going to avoid the list. Even the title gets your mind going as to what you're about to see.

The acting isn't great, although Baird Stafford is pretty good as the unstable George Tatum. The gore effects are pretty good and there's some genuinely nasty stuff here, including a slight detor into cannibal territory. Definitely not a film for everyone as it's far to sleazy and nasty to be entertaining, but I've always quite liked this one, so not sure what that says about me.

It's quite dated in places which can be a bit offputting, but if you're looking for some 80s nastiness then give this one a try. Just make sure you get an uncut version, or as near to uncut as can be as there's lots of different releases out there and not all are complete.
