Philosophy Of A Knife (2008)

My rating 4.5/10

This is a docu-drama detailing the story and events of Unit 731 that performed horrific experiments on Chinese prisoners during the second world war.

Using a mix of interviews and B/W footage this is a pretty brutal look at some of the most infamous atrocities commited during war times. Sadly at nearly four and a half hours long it becomes very tiresome very quickly. Some of the experiments are graphic and brutal and the effects are, for the most part pretty good, but it's just too boring with lots of scenes going on way too long.

It's fairly well made for what it is and some scenes are quite convincing, but if you're looking for something on Unit 731 then go and watch Men Behind The Sun (1988) instead. There's no doubt that Philosophy Of A Knife is disturbing and it's definitely only for those with a strong stomach, but in the end you may find youself fast forwarding through a lot of the slow, drawn out moments.
