The Jekyll And Hyde Portfolio (1971)

This truly bizarre early slasher movie was, and still is pretty obscure. Back in the early days of VHS the only known release it had worldwide was on the UKs Intervision label, but the only known tapes seemed to come from Australia. It's said that the owner of Intervision moved there and took this one with him. It had an ultra limited release making one of the true grails for VHS collectors. Even now an original can fetch between £750 - £1000.

It's a period piece and to be honest not very good. Saying that, I do have a bit of a fondness for this one but I'm not sure why!. There's plenty of nudity, a couple of mild sex scenes, some lesbian action and even a hunchback. Most of the deaths happen off screen and we get to see the aftermath of them, although the gore is pretty poor. There's some real frog dissection which won't please animal lovers, although one of the scenes just looks like the frog is covered in red paint blood. Maybe they only had one frog, I don't know.

The production, lighting in some scenes, dialogue and acting are all poor and it was obviously made on a tiny budget. If you like your horror movies on the obscure side though then it's worth a look and somehow there's a DVD of it out now, but I woudn't recommend you buy it unless you can get it cheap.
